Life in Technicolor

This is what Amy Winehouse sees ALL THE TIME.

One of the great upsides to being a soulless, mindless drone to the many whims of internet phenomena, and signing up to the inescapable timesink that is Twitter (apart from having a new timesink when I’m procrastinating) is that I finally get to toss short, inconsequential messages off to people I’d never have presumed to e-mail – people like Kris Straub, Dave Kellett, and sidebar-linked games journo, Leigh Alexander. And it’s thanks to Leigh’s “tweets” (that sounds vaguely rude) that I make this post, for she pointed me in the direction of these people: The Technicolor Victrola.

Listening to their music is like listening to Amy Winehouse if she was in any way talented (with the added bonus that the musicians of the Victrola probably won’t be dead by June 2010, unlike good ol’ Amy). Planting their flag somewhere between old soul and modern indie rock, the result is a remarkably listenable collection of songs. The highlight of the selections on their Myspace page (which as far as I know, is all that’s available to listen to – a Myspace message about any EPs I could peruse goes unanswered) is the gobsmacking Battle Cry, where singer, Valerie, unleashes the finest vocal performance I’ve heard this year – an incredible display of power, control and emotion.

(Also, if anyone from the Technicolor Victrola reads this, please get in touch about any EPs I might be able to get my hands on.)

It’s not often I like a band enough to interrupt the steady stream of negativity and cynicism I usually fill this blog with, so do go check them out. And in honour of this passing positivity, I’ll even give Amy Winehouse her due: she was incredible for a whole 5 minutes at one point.

OMG, I’m so glad I spread the love. They are playing SXSW around this time, I’m pretty sure, so FYI to anyone who’ll be there!

Holy moly! Leigh Alexander just commented on my blog! 😀 Readers, take note: I’m no longer the best writer on my own blog.

Raging fanboyism aside, thanks so much for pointing me in the Victrola’s direction – they just replied to my message, too, so I should have a proper official review done in the next few days. Yay!
